Barack Obama is the leader of the free world, but he takes being a father just as seriously.

At his last Fourth of July party before leaving office the president of the United States announced: "It's the job of a father to embarrass his daughters."

  • Yes, Mr President – we at dad.info definitely agree!

On Monday, the US leader held a White House concert for military families in celebration of America's Independence Day, but didn’t forget to put the spotlight on his daughter Malia, who was also celebrating her 18th birthday the same day!

With rapper Kendrick Lamar and singer Janelle Monae by his side, Mr Obama serenaded his eldest with an off-pitch rendition of Happy Birthday.

"Just because it's the job of a father to embarrass his daughters, I've got one last job," the president announced at the end of his speech.

"It just so happens that we celebrate our country's birthday on the same day that we celebrate my oldest daughter's birthday."

Malia took it all in her stride and later joined her dad on stage for a celebratory hug.

Addressing his guests at the event, Mr Obama also paid tribute to the members of the armed forces.

"We all know that our freedoms are dependent on an incredible group of men and women in uniform and their families who look out for us every single day.”
