Dad’s disability comic to be sold nationwide

A comic book about disabled superheroes created by a dad whose daughter has spina bifida is to be launched nationwide this weekend

This weekend, the book will be given a special launch at Hamley’s toy store in London, which is giving over three floors to the event.

Over 200 children dressed as superheroes are expected to attend what the organisers are calling ‘the party of the century’.

Strongbones, the children’s charitable trust which is publishing the comic, said, “Disabled children for so long have not seen any positive representation in the media that they consume

“This is the opportunity to start a change by presenting disability as a totally accessible, powerful concept that will, and must be, the start of total inclusion across the media spectrum.”

Dan is now hoping that the idea can be turned in to a TV series, reaching an even wider audience and changing attitudes towards disabled children.

Emily says she is very proud of her dad, who she thinks is ‘very good at drawing’, and says he should have his own superhero character.

Dan says superheroes “are a huge part of culture – everyone has an Avengers bag or has seen that sort of movie. I thought, if I could do this, everyone would see it.”
