GENERAL ELECTION: DADS WANT FAIRER ACCESS TO CHILDREN, POLL SUGGESTS

Dads polled ahead of the General Election say number 1 policy must be a system which supports fairer access to children following separation

DAD.info surveyed users on the forthcoming General Election on key policy issues facing families today. From the dads polled, findings revealed that dads are most concerned about the following policy areas:

1. Courts and Local Authorities needing to have a fairer system for access to children following separation

2. Increased mental health support

3. Maximum class sizes of 30 pupils in secondary schools

We were keen to gather information on the key issues for dads and their families. We identified some priority issues that we considered affect dads and their families today, and asked dads to rank them in order of importance. In addition to the above policy areas, the remaining rankings by dads were:

4. Statutory requirement for employers to offer flexible working arrangements to all employees

5. Overhaul of the child maintenance system to ensure fairness to both parties

6. Increased statutory pay for shared parental leave, and a review of the eligibility criteria

7. Abolition of university tuition fees

= Increase paid paternity leave to 1 month

9. 30 hours free childcare to parents aged 1 or over

10. Introduction of an additional bank holiday

Trevor Single, Chief Executive at Family Matters Institute (who run the DAD.info website) said “Our poll shows that the injustice in the different ways the courts determine Mums and Dads access to their children is far more important than reducing university fees or gaining another bank holiday. Dads regularly get a very bad deal over access to their children. It is important that a new Government addresses the imbalance in separated parents gaining access to their children. We want Mums and Dads to be treated equally unless there are exceptional circumstances”.
