Learning to ride a bike the fun way

HSBC UK Ready Set Ride is a simple learn to ride programme for kids aged 18 months to eight years, created by British Cycling together with the Youth Sport Trust.

For too long we have been so scared of our children hurting themselves we kind of wrap them in bubble-wrap and wouldn't dream of teaching them to ride a bike without stabilisers on. HSBC UK Ready Set Ride want to dispel these as myths and show how easy it is to get children to ride a bike without all that and have fun at the same time.

The idea is to get schools and families to introduce pedalling to playtime and be part of a child’s 'learn to ride journey', helping them to become confident and happy cyclists for life.

There are three simple stages which focus on the fundamental movements required to gain coordination, balance and confidence on two wheels. All of the games and activities can easily be delivered by teachers and school staff without training - plus you don’t need any bikes to get started.

The stages of HSBC UK Ready Set Ride:

  • Prepare 2 Ride: A series of short games to introduce the core skills for braking, steering and pedalling – while also helping children to develop physical literacy. The activities are perfect for the classroom or kitchen table - you don’t even need a bike to get started.

  • Skills 2 Ride – Balance: Using balance bikes kids can scoot around, controlling their movement while having a go at fun challenges. Through play children will develop new cycling techniques, gaining core balance and the confidence to try new things.

  • Skills 2 Ride – Pedals: The final step is all about introducing pedalling, where children are encouraged to progress their skills to become competent cyclists. These games help to improve speed control and bike handling to ensure safety and enjoyment for a lifetime of riding.

For schools, clubs and community groups, they provide 32 all-weather activity cards to play the games anywhere from out on the school field to the assembly hall floor. It doesn’t matter if you’re new to cycling, as there are helpful guides on everything from turning a pedal bike into a balance bike to fitting a helmet.

BBC TV presenter and mother of two, Helen Skelton, is their HSBC UK Ready Set Ride ambassador. Helen will be joining them at lots of exciting events over the summer.
