The health benefits of mushrooms

Loved or loathed, there’s no denying that mushrooms are packed with health benefits, so it’s probably time you bit the bullet and started putting (or sneaking them) on to yours and your kids’ plates, while we resist the urge to make any jokes about being a fun guy…

They’re low in fat and calories. So try swapping some meat for a few portions of mushrooms in dishes like stews and lasagnes. Finely chopping by hand or in a food processor is a great way to hide them, especially in Bolognese or chilli con carne sauces. They’re great during pregnancy, too, as they’re rich in the B vitamin folate, which helps contribute to maternal tissue growth. Rich in other B vitamins, they can help put some pep in your step. Vitamins B2, B3 and B5 help to reduce tiredness and fatigue, so maybe that mushroom omelette for an early brekkie isn’t such a  bad idea after all! Riboflavin (Vitamin B2) helps maintain systems in our body for normal energy release, as well as helping to maintain our blood and nervous system, and healthy skin and vision. Recent studies have shown that a diet that regularly includes mushrooms may help ward off the risk of certain cancers.

Around four medium-sized mushrooms (approx 80g) counts as one portion of your recommended five a day. If you’re put off by the texture of cooked mushrooms, slice raw closed-cup or button mushrooms, toss with a spicy dressing and serve as a salad. For loads more tasty ideas try justaddmushrooms.com
