Festive Foodie Tips For Your Fussy Eaters This Christmas

Encouraging little ones to explore and play with food is a great way to get them interested in their meals, and what better time to try than Christmas? Organix fussy food expert, Lucy Thomas, shares some top tips for junk-free foodie fun...

1. What's in Santa's stocking?

Wrap up festive produce in Christmas paper and take turns to guess what's inside just by the feel of them – carrots, sprouts and parsnips are great for this. 

2. Sprout on spoon races

Introducing sprouts into family games will help little ones to get used to the feel and look of a vegetable they might not have seen before.  

3. Pass the parsnip

Replacing the traditional orange with a parsnip in this popular Christmas game will make Christmas-dinner feasting that much easier.

4. Decorating gingerbread men

Get creative with coloured icing and toppings on gingerbread men biscuits. 

5. Cranberry sauce printing

Dipping raw or cooked festive veg and printing on paper will create some fun, alternative Christmas cards. 

How to introduce your child to sprouts…

Love them or hate them, Brussels sprouts are a Christmas tradition that always make an appearance over the holidays. Including your child in the preparation of Brussels sprouts (or 'fairy cabbages') will help them to get used to the ingredient and make them more appealing. It’s wonderful if you can buy them on the stalk as children have great fun pulling them off and enjoy the challenge of counting how many they have in their bowl.

* Sit down with your child and show how you can peel off the outer layers of leaves. See how far you can peel them and count the layers or leaves.

* Encourage your child to talk about what you are doing together by asking them about the colour, shape, smell and texture of the sprouts.

* See if you can help them to make flower shapes using the leaves as petals.

* Make the activity funny by seeing if a leaf will stick on your nose, cheek or chin.

* Stick a tiny piece on your tongue and see if they would like to copy (give them a hand mirror so they can see it on their tongue).

* Ask if they would rather hold it between their lips or make some teeth marks in it and see who has the scariest bite.
