Spooky happenings on the nation’s roads

Seen something spooky on the roads? You’re not alone. Really, check behind you…

Haunted cars are easy to find. There’s the Plymouth Fury from Stephen King’s Christine, but that’s just a work of fiction.

In real life there are stories of ‘Little B*stard’, James Dean’s Porsche; legend has it that Alec Guinness told Dean that the 550 Spyder had a sinister appearance, saying “If you get in that car, you’ll be found dead in it by this time next week.” Seven days later, Dean crashed and died.

The driver of Franz Ferdinand’s convertible took a wrong turn, avoiding an assassination attempt. Most would think that lucky, but a wrong turn later saw the car stopped directly in front of one of the assassins, and the inevitable happened. the car ended up with a governor in Yugoslavia where it took four accidents and the loss of an arm to convince him the car was cursed. Since then it became involved in a further two accidents leading to 13 deaths.

Few people realise there are, apparently, cursed roads, but research by insurance firm Be Wiser has found that 1 in 10 motorists have spotted something spooky on the nation’s roads.

It may come as a surprise that the M6 is considered the most haunted road in Britain, but at just over 230 miles long it’s the longest road in the UK, so it stands to reason that it sees its fair share of unusual activity. There have been reports of phantom Roman soldiers marching, a deranged woman at the side of the road, and an old-style vehicle driving against the traffic.

Gloucester Drive, Finsbury Park

There have been reports of the sound of footsteps on Gloucester Drive, with no source of the footsteps to be seen. They start at around 1am and are accompanied by the sound of breaking twigs.

The most haunted road in Scotland has been the subject of many reports of strange goings on, from ghostly figures emerging from the dark, to animals, horsemen and carriages on the road, and medieval people dragging handcarts along the carriageway. Reports date back at least 50 years.

The A9, Scotland

If you’d quite like to see a coach and horses with footmen walking alongside them, or perhaps a Victorian man on horseback, the A9 (running from Falkirk in central Scotland to Sceabster Harbour in the north) is the road for you. Otherwise, you may want to avoid this road at night!

Platt Lane is close to the site of the Pretoria Pit disaster in 1910, when an explosion caused the deaths of 344 men working in the mine. Motorists have reported seeing eyes peering out from the bushes, and miners walking down the road in the middle of the night.

Other reportedly haunted highways include the A616 – Stocksbridge bypass near Sheffield; the B3212 in Dartmoor, Devon; and W10, Greater London.

Luckily some 41% of respondents have never seen a ghost, and certainly don’t believe in them, while the most common place for people to see ghosts is in their own home.

The roads aren’t as spooky as they appear then.

Or are they…?
