Review: The Flying Bath by Julia Donaldson and David Roberts

Three unlikely superheroes, all set to clean up

Julia Donaldson has the happy knack of finding exactly the right partner for her famous rhyming couplets, and this time out, she’s teamed up with ex-fashion designer David Roberts. If you don’t know him already from his previous outings with Julia – Tyrannosaurus Drip, for example –  you’re more than likely acquainted with his own super-successful collaboration with Alan MacDonald, Dirty Bertie (the little charmer with a whole list of rather unsavoury habits to his credit).

When no-one is looking and the house is empty, three bath toys – a turtle, a frog and a duck – turn into an aquatic action squad, unlikely superheroes who take a bathful of water on all kinds of exciting rescue missions. Getting their calls on the shower head (well, you would, wouldn’t you?) the eco-friendly trio set about eking out a single bathful of water to rescue a thirsty kangaroo, a mucky pig, a baboon whose tree has caught fire, and a fish left floundering in an almost empty pond.

The Donaldson rhyming magic (well who doesn’t love The Gruffalo?) is matched perfectly by Roberts’ beautifully detailed and very funny illustrations. The Flying Bath has just the right amount of magic to make it special for kids and bring a new dimension of fun and imagination to bath and bedtime. Once you’ve read this together, it’s the sort of book that younger kids will want to return to by themselves to pore over clever David Robert’s whimsical drawings. Happy landings all round.
