10 Active Family Days Out

Our friends at KidRated – the website where all the reviews are done by kids to help parents make more informed choices – have found 10 amazing active days out for your and your family…

Got an adrenalin junkie in the family? Well put them in a chamber, turn on four large fans to generate wind speeds of 120mph and watch them start flying. That, in a nutshell, is Airkix – the UK’s leading venue for indoor skydiving.

Kids will love: Quickly getting the hang of their airborne acrobatics.

Adults will love: The friendly staff who cater for everyone including the disabled.

Check out the KidRated AIRKIX review.

When we heard there was a theme park full of mechanical equipment, we originally thought it must still be under construction. But that’s Diggerland’s USP and we couldn’t be happier. There are four venues across the UK in Kent, Durham, Yorkshire and Devon, and each one has over 100 diggers and dumpers, so if you’ve never seen the look on the face of a kid operating a JCB, now’s the time to go!

Kids will love: Spindizzy – a digger that doubles as a high-speed fairground ride.

Adults will love: Didn’t you hear us? You get to play with Diggers!

Let your kids release their inner Lewis Hamilton as they whiz ’round a track, inches from the tarmac.

We’ve yet to have a bad review from a Daytona Motorsport centre. There are four venues around the UK – Manchester, Milton Keynes, Sandown Park and Tamworth – all of which promise top-notch safety equipment and are staffed with professionals. Great to do with a friend and perfect for a birthday party.

Kids will love: Coming first!

Adults will love: The Easter special offers which include 2-for-1 deals and 20% off.

Kids never forget a trip to a farm and with spring lambs being adorably cute, the Easter holidays is the perfect time to go. Our top three are Willows Activity Farm in St Albans;  Stockley Farm in Northwich and Odds Farm in High Wycombe.

For kids in London we recommend a city farm visit, with Spitalfields City Farm and Hackney City Farm being two of the best.

All of the above have fun family activities, decent cafes, and don’t forget to drop by the farm shop before you leave.

Kids will love: Interacting with the animals.

Adults will love: Getting the kids away from the screens and into the fresh air.

After some numpty decided footballers were worth paying £300,000 a week, many clubs have had to explore other ways of raising money and attracting new fans. The result being behind-the-scenes tours.

The format is pretty similar at each club. You can do a standard tour, or one with a ‘Legend’, who not only shows you round but does a Q & A as well. Our favourites are Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool and Manchester United.

Kids will love: Anything that reminds them of their heroes.

Adults will love: See above.

Leicester isn’t just home to the unexpected Premiership leaders, you’ll also find the only UK visitor attraction that focuses on Space. Inside, you’ll be treated to hours of breathtaking discovery where the stories, personalities and technology of the past and present are used to explain our current understanding of space and how it will affect our future.

Kids will love: The Rocket Tower and interactive exhibits.

Adults will love: Its multi-media Space Theatre which houses a new hi-tech planetarium.

You don’t have to head to the Alps to enjoy a day on a ski slope – just head over to Hertfordshire where The Snow Centre in Hemel Hempstead offers visitors the thrills and spills of real snow skiing.

In this state-of-the-art, air-tight ski box there is both a 160-metre main slope and a 100-metre nursery slope, so it’s perfect for parents to show off while the youngsters practice falling over. Or should that be the other way round?

For those who prefer to spectate, there’s a three-storey ‘warm side’ area with shops, restaurants and equipment hire facilities.

Kids will love: The snowboarding jumps.

Adults will love: Staying vertical for longer than a minute.

The National Football Museum expertly shows how and why football has become ‘the people’s game’, a key part of England’s heritage and a way of life for so many.

It also expertly explains why England is the home of football, the birthplace of the world’s most popular sport.

Kids will love: Football Plus: seven brilliant interactive exhibits that let kids do everything from testing their football prowess to their commentary skills.

Adults will love: George Best’s school report that says he was quite good at PE!

Lee Valley played host to the Canoe Slalom events during the London 2012 Games and is home to a variety of exciting white water activities.

The centre offers expert tuition in canoeing and kayaking, but it’s the Hydrospeeding that kids really love, allowing them to swim through the artificial rapids with a float.

Kids will love: Getting kitted out in all the gear and then throwing themselves in the water.

Adults will love: The roof terrace where they can kick back and have a drink.

With so much at Pensthorpe to experience and explore, your kids will soon forget all about playing with your tablet. Children will enjoy getting close to nature at this award-winning attraction in the heart of Norfolk, as they become bug detectives on the Bug Walk, build a den and pick up their free gift after collecting all the stamps on the WildRootz Trail.

Kids will love: Following the new WildRootz Adventure Trail opening this summer.

Adults will love: Hootz House indoor play area – perfect when you’re not sure where to take the kids on rainy days.

Check out the KidRated Wildrootz review.
