Gone Girl
Starring: Ben Affleck, Rosamund Pike, Tyler Perry
Don’t worry – no spoilers here for those who haven’t already seen it or read the book. Suffice to say that David Fincher handles this emotionally brutal drama brilliantly and the performances – particularly by Pike who deserves all the awards buzz she is getting – are fabulous. It will cause hundreds of rows in households watching this on DVD, but it will be worth it.
Life After Beth
{youtube}2SGPSDbC7QI{/youtube}
Starring: Aubrey Plaza, Dane DeHaan, John C Reilly
What would you do if your girlfriend/daughter/loved one came back to life – but wasn’t exactly like she was before (i.e. a flesh-desiring zombie)? That’s the premise of this extremely dark indie comedy, which cleverly matches wit and horror.
If I Stay
{youtube}m9hZ40TJ0zs{/youtube}
Starring: Chloë Grace Moretz, Jamie Blackley, Mireille Enos
Based on a best-selling young adult novel, Moretz is a girl who just about survives a car crash and spends the film in a coma – essentially deciding whether to join her parents on the other side or stay alive and remain with her boyfriend. So yeah, it’s a weepie. Definitely one to recommend to your teenage girls.
Maps To The Stars
{youtube}YLuGZcVAW78{/youtube}
Starring: Julianne Moore, Robert Pattinson, Mia Wasikowska
Moore scored a Golden Globe nomination for her portrayal of a fading actress in this David Cronenberg movie, which is packed full of his usual cynicism and strangeness. His partnership with ex-Twilighter Pattinson continues in what is a savage indictment of Hollywood and what it stands for. Not an easy watch.
