June is often not the best time for DVDs, what with people going away on holiday and big movies at the cinema. Here are the ones you should be looking out for this month…
While We’re Young
Starring: Ben Stiller, Naomi Watts, Adam Driver
This indie passed most people by at the cinema, but for those of you who are tucking into middle age and wondering whether you should be doing more with your life – this is for you. Following a middle-aged creative couple who fall in with a couple of hipsters, whose love of “retro” paraphernalia is both enticing and repellent, it’s sharply observed.
Written and directed by Noah Baumbach (Frances Ha) with a great cast, it’s well worth a look. How you respond will cause some healthy debates in the sitting room.
Starring: Jim Parsons, Rihanna, Steve Martin
A new take on the “alien coming to Earth and hanging out with a kid” genre, this has Big Bang Theory star Parsons as the nerdy alien, with pop star Rihanna as his comrade, who’s got her own stuff going on.
Not ground-breaking, but kids should love it.
Starring: Sean Penn, Mark Rylance, Javier Bardem
Penn appears to contend that he did this because it was a devastating treatise on governmental oppression and the harsh treatment of developing countries. He’s wrong of course: it’s a silly, perfectly entertaining action romp from the guy who brought you Taken.
X-Men: Days Of Future Past – The Rogue Cut
Starring: Anna Paquin, James McAvoy, Jennifer Lawrence
The time travel stuff may be almost impenetrable, but that aside, the new crop of X-Men films benefit from a great ensemble and intriguing storylines. This is a bit of a commercial grab, but for those of you desperate to see Anna Paquin’s scenes as Rogue restored to the final cut, here’s your chance. If you haven’t caught up with the film yet period, it’s thoroughly entertaining.
