SPOOKS: THE GREATER GOOD AND THE REST OF THE FORTNIGHT’S MOVIES

The BBC’s hit Saturday night drama gets a makeover for the big-screen, with the one of the stars of Game Of Thrones trying to save the world. And Carey Mulligan take on Tom Hardy in a new adaptation

Spooks: The Greater Good

Starring: Kit Harington, Lara Pulver, Peter Firth

For a British TV geek, this movie is almost too much. A big-screen version of the long-running Saturday night spy thriller, starring Jon Snow out of Game of Thrones and the naked Irene Adler from Sherlock. Combined, they feature in a global espionage mystery in which a young agent (Harington) tries to capture a terrorist who’s escaped from custody and is planning an attack on London. The original show always had pace and great action sequences, even for British telly. Now they’ve got a cinematic budget – and scope – to match.

Everly

Starring: Salma Hayek, Jennifer Blanc, Caroline Chikezie

Hayek seems to have spent most of the last few years off-screen raising her children and hanging about with her billionaire hubby. So it’s a pleasure to see her back on-screen and returning to the kind of kick-ass role with which she started her career in movies like Desperado. Everly is high-concept and utterly simple. A woman is stuck in an apartment with hundreds of men trying to kill her, while she does everything she can to survive. That involves weapons. And lots of blood.

Far From The Madding Crowd

Starring: Carey Mulligan, Juno Temple, Michael Sheen

This prestigious adaptation of Thomas Hardy’s seminal novel features a stellar cast acting their socks off in what is likely to feature come next year’s awards. Former Dogme ’95 auteur Thomas Vinterberg directs Mulligan as the tough farmer heroine who is pursued by three different suitors.

Big Game

Starring: Samuel L Jackson, Onni Tommila, Ray Stevenson There can be big plus points to Samuel L. Jackson never saying no to anything. This is one of them – a bonkers Finnish flick featuring Sam as a US President whose plane is shot down in the Scandinavian forest where he teams up with a 13-year-old local boy against the terrorists out to get him. One of the oddest buddy movies ever.

A Royal Night Out

{youtube}oaF-HdgZVU8{/youtube}

Starring: Sarah Gadon, Bel Powley, Emily Watson One of those British comedy-dramas in the vein of The King’s Speech, this period pic tells the story of how then-Princess Elizabeth and her sister Margaret were allowed out of Buckingham Palace for one night as “regular people” to celebrate the end of the Second World War with the rest of London. Surprise surprise, there are lots of hunky soldiers about. Wonder what her Maj will think of it?
