THE MAN FROM U.N.C.L.E. AND THE REST OF THE BEST MOVIES THIS FORTNIGHT

It’s August and this month we’ve got Sixties spies, the new Bridesmaids, comic book heroes and for those of a certain age – a little bit of Donkey Kong…

The Man From U.N.C.L.E.

Starring: Henry Cavill, Armie Hammer, Alicia Vikander

This adaptation of the iconic Sixties series has been in the works for some time – at one point Tom Cruise was attached to star. He’s been replaced by Cavill, a shrewd move because the actor also known as Superman can really pull off a suit. Hammer meanwhile tries on a Russian accent for size as his nemesis-turned-collaborator Ilya Kuryakin. It’s a good idea to set the film in the original era – partly because of the aforementioned attire, but also because it lends a sheen to cool to what otherwise could have been a blunt Guy Ritchie actioner. The director has never shown that much depth and it’s difficult to say whether the title will chime much with today’s yoof, but expect the franchise to kick in here.

Trainwreck

Starring: Amy Schumer, Bill Hader, LeBron James

Cool American comedy fans have been onto Schumer for some time, thanks to her TV sketch show and appearances at various celebrity roasts. This pic about a boozy writer who suddenly finds herself falling for a guy will no doubt launch her into the stratosphere. She’s great – but the film’s secret weapon is Hader. He may not be typical romcom handsome (thank God), but he’s flat-out one of the funniest actors working today.

Pixels

Starring: Adam Sandler, Josh Gad, Peter Dinklage

A clever high-concept fable sees a group of videogame nerds find themselves as potential saviours of mankind when malevolent aliens decide to invade Earth using retro arcade methods. Sounds kind of stupid too, which is fine – this is an Adam Sandler movie after all. But one for young boys? Lovely.

Fantastic Four

Starring: Miles Teller, Michael B. Jordan, Kate Mara

Marvel’s original tentpole quartet get the reboot treatment and we’re all expected to forget the moribund big-screen attempt in the mid-Noughties. Here, the director of clever found-footage superhero flick Chronicle offers his take, with a fresh young cast.
