As the autumn nights draw in, we’ve got a mix of Oscar bait, Michael Fassbender taking on ‘the Scottish play’ and Robert De Niro as a septuagenarian work experience employee…

The Walk

Starring: Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Ben Kingsley, Charlotte Le Bon

Those of you who saw documentary Man on Wire will know the story, but this is the biopic version of Philippe Petit (Gordon-Levitt), the French daredevil who walked on a tight-rope between the Twin Towers in 1974. Directed by Robert Zemeckis, we know the story is compelling and the cast is top-notch. Gordon-Levitt is already being mentioned as a possible Oscar contender come next year.

Macbeth

Starring: Michael Fassbender, Marion Cotillard, Sean Harris

Putting Shakespeare on-screen isn’t easy, though it’s considerably more straightforward if you’ve got a star with the charisma of Michael Fassbender playing the titular Scottish monarch. Cotillard is an intriguing choice as his Lady, whilst the supporting cast is filled with brilliant actors like Harris and Jack Reynor. Already lauded on the festival circuit, this is another movie being touted for awards.

Masterminds

Starring: Kristen Wiig, Owen Wilson, Zach Galifianakis

Based on a true story about one of the largest armoured car heists in US history, this ensemble action comedy features an incredibly funny cast and most unlikely back history. How these guys ever managed to pull off the crime is anyone’s guess, but their subsequent implosion manages to be both witty and full of empathy.

The Intern

Starring: Robert De Niro, Anne Hathaway, Nat Wolff

Seeing De Niro’s name on a poster isn’t always a mark of quality these days, but it’s nice to see him embracing his age a little in this comedy-drama about an older man who returns to the lowest rung of the workplace. Hathaway plays the high-flier who has a little more going on that it initially seems and what emerges is an original friendship story, showcasing great chemistry between the two charismatic leads.
