The Brit Awards nominees you SHOULD know about…

We know what you’re thinking. You’re too old and busy for ‘that noise’ the kids listen to these days. So why on earth would you tune into the music industry’s pop-obsessed awards ceremony later this month when frankly, you could be sitting on your sofa flicking through the Netflix menu? Well, hear us out. There are actually two good reasons…

Firstly, believe us when we say the kids will appreciate your efforts if you knew a small amount of rubbish pop trivia. You could be the coolest dad on the planet. And we can help you. Secondly, there are some really decent new musicians out there who will be saluted by either a nomination or an actual gong on the big night – and what easier way is there to keep track of who’s new and worth streaming? You can Shazam it right then and there from your sofa and boom – fresh tunes for your ears. You can thank us later.

Anyway, these are the ones you want to be looking out for during the big show in three weeks’ time. Shazam at the ready.

1) FKA Twiggs – British Breakthrough Act, British Female Solo Artist

Yeah okay, so she could have picked a normal stage name – but FKA (aka Tahliah Debrett Barnett) is one of the highest rated new artists at the moment. Her tunes are a mix of R&B electronic, with a bit of rap on the side, and she writes them all herself – which is quite a rarity these days. Since releasing her album, LP1, last year, she’s been nominated for a Mercury Prize and can call Jools Holland one of her most famous fans. Oh and if you are curious, FKA stands for ‘Formerly Known As’.

2) Hozier – International Male Solo Artist

This fella is causing a real stir on the London music scene at the moment, and with one listen to his tracks, it’s not hard to hear why. Originally from County Wicklow, Ireland, Andrew Hozier-Byrn feels brand spanking new, but he’s been playing to TV audiences in the US and was nominated for ‘Song of the Year’ at the Grammys. The British press are also about to jump on his bandwagon, so have a listen and get in there first – before the whole country does.

3) Ed Sheeran – British Single, British Video, British Male Solo Artist

Yorkshire-born Ed may already be on your playlists, just purely because he’s bloomin’ everywhere right now. And rightly so. The man’s current single Thinking Out Loud is on track to be one of the most-played songs of 2015 (if Magic FM have anything to do with it) and to think, he started off by releasing an EP on YouTube which happened to catch the attention of Sir Elton John and Jamie Foxx. Not bad, eh? He already has two Brits, an Ivor Novello and a Grammy on his mantelpiece and he’s definitely due a few more. Yes, he may be half your age, but the boy has talent. Plus, the missus will approve.

4) Alt J – British Group, Mastercard Album of the Year

These Leeds rockers, made up of Gwil Sainsbury (guitar/bass), Joe Newman (guitar/lead vocals), Gus Unger-Hamilton (keyboards/vocals) and Thom Green (drums), have been bumming about the music scene since 2012, when they released their debut record An Awesome Wave. It won them the Mercury Prize. Since then the band have produced a track for Silver Linings Playbook (starring Bradley Cooper and Jennifer Lawrence) and nabbed an Ivor Novello Award.

5) 5 Seconds of Summer – International Group

These guys – Luke, Michael, Calum and Ashton – should be on your radar not for personal reasons, but because if you have a daughter, the chances are she is obsessed. Hailed to take over One Direction in the ‘biggest boy band in the world’ stakes, these four pop-punk yielding guys from Sydney, Australia have already toured the US with the X Factor winners and are slowly but surely taking over every teen magazine cover and newspaper showbiz column on the planet. Watch this space, you’ll be shelling out for concert tickets before you know it.

The Brit Awards 2015 sponsored by Mastercard, Wednesday 25 February, ITV, 8pm
