Summer 2015: Must-watch TV

The summer is nearly upon us and that means our TV schedules are about to improve ten-fold…

That’s right, you no longer have to rely on the usual fillers like Big Brother, Celebrity Big Brother, The X Factor and, er, Britain’s Got The Big Brother Get Me Out of Here Voice Factor to fill your evenings. Because these big guns are about to appear on air.

True Detective, Season 2

Where? Sky Atlantic

When? 22 June

Last time we saw Rusty Cohle and Marty Hart, they were considering the power of light and dark under a blanket of stars. And in just over a month, they return with another eight-episode strong series written by the superbly talented Nic Pizzolatto. The official word is the series will follow “three police officers and a career criminal, who must navigate a web of conspiracy in the aftermath of a murder” (thanks HBO for that). What we know is 52 year old Ben Casper, a corrupt manager of a fictional city, is found murdered on the eve of a huge transportation deal going through. Enter three detectives; PD Ray Velcro (Colin Farrell), Sherriff Ani Bezzerides (Rachel McAdams – hallelujah!) and highway patrol officer Paul Woodrugh (Taylor Kitsch). And off to work they go.

TFI Friday
Where? C4
When? 12 June, 9pm

If nostalgia is your thing (and let’s face it, we all love a bit of it), then tune in next month to the big return of iconic 90s TV entertainment show, TFI Friday. But don’t forget to set your Sky Plus box, because this is your only chance to catch the programme which is making a comeback for just one 90 minute live special.
Hosting the extravaganza will be original show presenter and DJ, Chris Evans, who will bring back classic segments such as Freak Or Unique, Ugly Bloke or Fat Lookalikes and live music. The show’s return celebrates nearly 20 years since TFI Friday’s first broadcast in 1996.

Extant, Season 2
Where? Amazon Prime Instant Video
When? 2 July

None other than David Morrissey will be appearing in the new series of Extant, which tells the story of a female astronaut (Halle Berry) who returns home to her husband and son after a year-long solo mission in space, er, pregnant. Far-fetched maybe, but it’s been Amazon Prime’s big breaking show in the UK. The show first aired in 2013 on US channel CBS, and swiftly nabbed a well-deserved Oscar. But can it compete with the big guns like Game of Thrones and Breaking Bad? The jury is still out…

Orange Is The New Black, Season 3
Where? Netflix
When? 12 June

“People think all we do is have lesbian s** and strip searches and naked cat fights in the shower,” explains Piper (Taylor Schilling) to new inmates in the latest Orange trailer. “We also do other things.”
Which is good to know because the above was getting a little tedious in season two. Schilling’s character Piper makes a return alongside Alex (Laura Prepon), Sam (Michael J. Harvey), Red (Kate Mulgrew), Crazy Eyes (Uzo Aduba) and Poussey (Samira Wiley) – with three big new characters also said to be joining. We suggest sticking with it.
