American Sniper

Starring: Bradley Cooper, Sienna Miller, Kyle Gallner

Everyone was surprised at the bucketloads of cash that American Sniper earned (and it’s sparked a flurry of copycat movies), but director Clint Eastwood knows how to handle material of this nature, while Cooper is an actor who maturing into his role as an award-worthy performer. People have argued whether this is too

Ex Machina

Starring: Domhnall Gleeson, Oscar Isaac, Alicia Vikander

A contemplative take on AI by writer/director Alex Garland sees a young computer programmer (Gleeson) summoned to the home a reclusive genius (Isaac) for what turns out to be the ultimate Turing Test. Garland has some vivid ideas about the nature of consciousness and the so-called danger of computers taking over the world – if only computers were as gorgeous and charismatic as Swedish up-and-comer Vikander.

Inherent Vice

Starring: Joaquin Phoenix, Josh Brolin, Katherine Waterston

Paul Thomas Anderson’s latest epic – about a PI searching for a former girlfriend in 1970 – is adapted from a Thomas Pynchon novel and watching it has been compared to being under the influence of various substances. Whatever the case, Anderson’s perspective is never less than fascinating, even if his adherence to plot can be a little shoddy.

Kingsman: The Secret Service

Starring: Colin Firth, Taron Egerton, Mark Strong

Firth gets a chance to kick some bottom in this comic book adaptation as the mentor to a young spy upstart. Director Matthew Vaughn knows how to handle action and fun (see: Kick-Ass), while an Oscar-winning suit-wearer beating the crud out of people with an umbrella can’t be ignored. The sequel is already in the works.

Shaun The Sheep Movie

{youtube}tQvwiOWpj7o{/youtube}

Starring: Justin Fletcher, Kate Harbour, Andy Nyman Pretty simple this one – if your child likes the TV series, here’s a great opportunity to spend some time sitting down in a dark theatre while they enjoy what is essentially a long-form episode of the show. It’s put together well – if they love Shaun, they’ll love this.
