It's May - and here are the movies with which to relax at home for the next fortnight

Starring: Michael Keaton, Edward Norton, Emma Stone

This year’s Best Picture Oscar winner (along with three other statues) is a bombastic exercise in cinematic style, charting the Broadway debut of a former A-list superhero star (Keaton) as he mounts a play in a bid for credibility. There’s great acting all round, particularly from Norton as the douchey co-star and Keaton, himself a former screen comic book character. It’s not as clever as it thinks it is, but the Academy Award for Best Cinematography was much-deserved, making this at least a unique experience, even if it isn’t a classic one.

The Theory Of Everything

Starring: Eddie Redmayne, Felicity Jones, Charlie Cox

Redmayne rightly won the Oscar for his portrayal of Stephen Hawking in this biopic, never going over the top and thus making his performance authentic and compelling. But while everyone calls this the Hawking film, it’s really about another member of the family, namely his first wife Jane. Adapted from her autobiography, we understand what it must have been like to be married to a difficult and disabled genius thanks to Jones’s empathetic turn.

The Last Five Years

Starring: Anna Kendrick, Jeremy Jordan, Bettina Bresnan Previously a musical, this tale of a marriage gone wrong has been brought to life on-screen with two fine actors in Kendrick and Jordan (who’s well-known to Broadway fans as an accomplished stage performer). We learn the story of their relationship two ways –from the beginning from the man’s point of view and in reverse from the girl Cathy’s. That device adds poignancy, while the duo’s singing voices will mean that although it’s not a great date movie, it’s effective at causing tears to be shed.
