Exodus: Gods and Kings and the rest of the week’s DVDs
What to look out for on DVD this week...
Exodus: Gods and Kings
Starring: Christian Bale, Joel Edgerton, Aaron Paul
Director Ridley Scott once again turns to swords and sandals, this time delving into the Bible and the story of Moses. It’s all very well-crafted, but it lacks the verve of those old epics, while many of the supporting cast are wasted. More an impressive technical achievement than a particularly great filmic one.
Starring: Cameron Diaz, Jamie Foxx, Quvenzhané Wallis
It’s been quite a while since we were told about the little orphan’s hard knock life first time around, so a reboot is timely. This time, the action’s been transposed to the modern day, with Wallis as the smiling heroine, Foxx as her benefactor and Diaz pulling baddie duty as Miss Hannigan. Lots of upbeat songs and some good dancing make up for a lack of story.
The Knife That Killed Me
Starring: Jack McMullen, Reece Dinsdale, Jamie Shelton
It's likely you missed this during its theatrical release, but this adaptation of Anthony McGowan’s young adult novel has plenty of real-world relevance, telling the story of a young man caught up in knife violence. What makes this particularly stand out is its unique shooting style. The entire thing was filmed against green screen, enabling the filmmakers to create a mood, indeed a genre, quite unlike anything you’ve ever seen before.
