THE BABADOOK PLUS MORE DVD RELEASES THIS WEEK
Want to know what movies you should be watching at home this week?
Starring: Essie Davis, Noah Wiseman, Daniel Henshall
One of the best-reviewed horror movies of last year, it’s not to everyone’s taste. But this Aussie chiller is great for those who prefer to stay away from gore, using psychological shocks to scare in a tale about a mysterious and potentially deadly book. And you never know, maybe telling your kid the Babadook will come if they’re not good little children might mean some chores get done around the house finally.
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
Starring: Megan Fox, Will Arnett, William Fichtner, Danny Woodburn
There was much excitement amongst men of a certain age when a reboot of TMNT was announced – mainly because it was such a part of our youth, but also because it suggested that Vanilla Ice might finally get that big-screen comeback he’s long deserved. What we got wasn’t exactly innovative, rather slightly peculiar-looking mo-cap turtles and Megan Fox screaming a lot. So it’s not clever, but the action is frenetic and it will make you feel like a kid again.
The Book Of Life
Starring: (voices of) Diego Luna, Zoe Saldana, Channing Tatum
Based in various Hispanic myths, this beautifully-rendered animation has a stellar voice cast and the hand of Guillermo Del Toro over it as producer. It’s not going to win any awards for Pixar-like complexity, but it tackles some topics not usually covered in kids films (Mexican cultural heritage anyone?) and it looks great, which will appease the youngsters.
Dolphin Tale 2
Starring: Morgan Freeman, Ashley Judd, Nathan Gamble There’s plenty of syrup in this animal-centric sequel, but that’s absolutely fine if what your kids want to watch is lovely dolphins swimming about being all strokeable. Even if it does mean they’ll ask for one for their birthday.
