National Lampoon’s Vacation

The benchmark by which all holiday movies are judged, the Griswolds, led by Chevy Chase, head to Walleyworld in the car. One of Mike Leigh’s most underrated efforts, a couple go camping in Dorset and hate pretty much every minute. There are two brilliant performances by Roger Sloman and Alison Steadman.

This 2014 British film is a cracking little effort, from the guys who created TV show Outnumbered. They employ the same tactic here – letting the kids of a family on holiday in Scotland improvise their lines and the results are very funny. The scenery is beautiful, while Billy Connolly provides witty support as the grandpa. It’s surprisingly poignant too.

Dan Aykroyd and John Candy in a movie together – what’s not to like? Written by John Hughes, Candy is the down-to-earth family man whose peaceful rural idyll is ruined by his in-laws. Watching these two master comedians at work says it all.
