Best new movies released this week (10 November)
Got a babysitter this week? Here's what's on at the cinema...
Starring: Tom Hardy, James Gandolfini, Noomi Rapace
James Gandolfini’s final film is a gritty New York crime drama – natch – starring Hardy as a man out of his depth after a robbery goes wrong. The story may not sound entirely fresh, but with acting pedigree like that and coming from the pen of Dennis Lehane, who wrote the novels on which Mystic River and Gone Baby Gone were based, there’s much to enjoy.
Starring: Roger Ebert, Chaz Ebert, Martin Scorsese Ebert was one of the most famous movie critics in the world (think the US Barry Norman times a thousand), whose latter years were blighted by cancer and an operation which rendered him unable to talk. He took to social media with a vengeance and this doco from Hoop Dreams’ director Steve James attempts to capture the essence of the outspoken commentator. Would he give the film of his life a thumbs up or thumbs down? Decide for yourself.
The Imitation Game
Starring: Benedict Cumberbatch, Keira Knightley, Matthew Goode
Cumberbatch stakes a claim for Oscar glory as renowned WWII codebreaker Alan Turing, whose tormented life ended in undeserved acrimony and ultimately, suicide. But this isn’t just a rote biopic thanks to a classy cast and fascinating protagonist. One for history buffs as well as Cumberb*****s.
