BLACK MASS AND THE BEST OF THE REST OUT THIS FORTNIGHT

Johnny Depp finally gets himself out of his pirate clothes and Katniss gets to the Capitol in something other than a flaming chariot. These are just some of the images you'll see in the best new movies from the next two weeks

Black Mass

Starring: Johnny Depp, Joel Edgerton, Benedict Cumberbatch

Depp finally swerves away from the parodic characters he’s been swamped in of late to use his talents for much more magnetic purposes.

James ‘Whitey’ Bulger was one of the most unpleasant gangsters America’s ever had, even though he ended up informing (sort of) on his villainous cohorts for the FBI before going on the run.

This doesn’t sugarcoat Bulger’s personality (though people have complained it makes him out to look cool and we can see why they make that claim), but hopefully by the end of this well-crafted drama, it’s clear how despicable he really was.

Depp does a fine job, but it’s the supporting cast who are really special, particularly Edgerton as Bulger’s handler and Cumberbatch as his brother, who was, remarkably, a state senator.

The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2

Starring: Jennifer Lawrence, Julianne Moore, Josh Hutcherson

The franchise finally comes to an end and there’s not one teenage girl who’s not going to be there to see it.

With the previous instalment falling flat (it basically didn’t need to exist, but money is thicker than story), this promises to finish Katniss’s brutal story with a flourish as the rebels head to the Capitol to put an end to President Snow once and for all.

Be prepared – not many make it out alive.

Bridge Of Spies

Starring: Tom Hanks, Mark Rylance, Amy Ryan

Steven Spielberg returns to wartime with this fascinating and beautifully-made account of a lawyer recruited by the CIA during the Cold War to rescue a pilot caught in the Soviet Union.

Inspired by a true story, it involves dealing with a Russian spy (Rylance) which puts Hanks’ family in danger, while tense negotiations are carried out below the official radar.

Classy, compelling and Rylance is the best he’s ever been (though actually, we still prefer him as Flop in Bing on CBeebies).

The Good Dinosaur

Starring: Raymond Ochoa, Jeffrey Wright, Steve Zahn

This Pixar movie has been a long time coming to cinemas – it was redeveloped and reworked during production when the bigwigs at the animation company decided it wasn’t going in the right direction.

That meant a new, more diverse voice cast for a tale about a young dino who makes an unlikely human friend. The science may not be up to snuff, but this is Pixar – nuff said. Plus it’s cuddly dinosaurs and how can you deny the kids them, right?
