John Wick and the other films out this week
The best movies at the cinema this week...
Starring: Keanu Reeves, Michael Nyqvist, Willem Dafoe
Already a smash hit return to form for Keanu in the States, this is a simple, gritty revenge thriller in which a hitman (Reeves) is brought out of retirement to kill the bad guys who destroyed his life. Stylish, exciting and brutal, there’s already a sequel in the works.
Hot Tub Time Machine 2
Starring: Craig Robinson, Rob Corddry, Clark Duke, Adam Scott
More Jacuzzi-caused splits in the space-time continuum as the gang (minus John Cusack as Adam) attempt to help Lou (Corddry) in the past, but end up meeting Adam’s future son (Scott). Let’s face it, logic was never the original’s strong point, but suffice to say this is more of the same silly, but fun, rudeness.
Starring: Mae Whitman, Robbie Amell, Bella Thorne
Adapted from a young adult novel, this stars the brilliant Whitman (who finally gets her deserved moment in the spotlight after multitudinous supporting roles) as the so-called DUFF. That’s Designated Ugly Fat Friend. Of course, she’s actually neither fat nor ugly because this is Hollywood (and authorial wish fulfilment), but tween girls will enjoy it and Whitman is great.
Woman in Gold
Starring: Ryan Reynolds, Helen Mirren, Katie Holmes
Another true story, in which Mirren plays a Jewish refugee who sought to have famous paintings that were owned by her family returned by the Austrian government 60 years after they were stolen by the Nazis. With Reynolds as her tireless lawyer, this is perfect material for Dame Helen, who is in her element.
