LET’S TAKE A LOOK AT SOME OF THE EARLY DAD-FRIENDLY OSCAR FRONT-RUNNERS

The summer is fading into the distance and the autumn film festivals have been and gone, which means that a lot of this year's awards bait has already been unveiled. But at this stage, which dad-friendly movies and performances are vying for Oscar and BAFTA glory in 2016?

BEST FILM

After the success of Birdman last year, anticipation is high for the director's next foray, a wilderness drama called The Revenant. Starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Tom Hardy, there have been various stories about a difficult shoot in the wilds of Canada. But a juicy backstory only adds more layers and it's always been the case that once you're on Oscar voters' minds, you tend to stay there.

Quentin Tarantino will be hoping that his new Western The Hateful Eight gets some love. He's had screenplay success in the past, but never the big one. This would potentially be an outsider, but he always campaigns well and it would be a great coup for the Academy for something so genre to actually win.

There's also Steve Jobs, for which Michael Fassbender as the Apple visionary and Seth Rogen as co-founder Steve Wozniak will also be amongst those in the mix for acting honours. It's got a great pedigree - written by Oscar-winner Aaron Sorkin and directed by one too (Danny Boyle), it feels like Fassbender is at the pinnacle of his powers and since most people in Hollywood have an iPhone...

BEST ACTOR

Tom Hardy is already one of the frontrunners for the Best Actor gong, thanks to his double turn in Kray Brothers biopic Legend. But for which sibling will he be nominated? Chances are it will be Ronnie, the more psychotically violent of the two and thus the showier role.

Breaking Bad star Bryan Cranston is also impressing as blacklisted screenwriter Dalton Trumbo in another life story. Caught up in the Joseph McCarthy witch-hunt, Trumbo is known as the writer of Spartacus amongst others.

Matt Damon is also putting himself in the running with The Martian, Ridley Scott's sci-fi book adaptation about an astronaut stranded on Mars. Spending a lot of the movie by himself means that the ever-dependable Damon really gets to strut his often-underestimated stuff.

It's also worth keeping an eye on Leo DiCaprio (often a usher, so far never the groom), Tom Hanks in Steven Spielberg's Bridge of Spies and Joseph Gordon-Levitt as whistleblower Edward Snowden (what is it with biopics and awards?!) Jake Gyllenhaal has also been mentioned, but that's more likely to be i the Best Supporting category for real-life mountaineering action-drama, Everest.
