What to watch at the cinema this week

Yes, it's a gun, not an Oscar I Image:Studiocanal

The Gunman

Starring: Sean Penn, Idris Elba, Javier Bardem

It’s become de rigeur for serious actors of a certain age to show how masculine and fit they are by becoming action stars. Now it’s the turn of Penn, who lends his immense talents to a kind of Bourne-meets-Taken action thriller (director Pierre Morel was in charge of the latter). Silly sure, but the cast is superb.

The Divergent Series: Insurgent

Starring: Shailene Woodley, Theo James, Kate Winslet

Mostly known as “the one which is like The Hunger Games, but isn’t”, this is the sequel to last year’s Divergent in which Woodley joined a dystopian ‘faction’ and then surprise, surprise realised it was all a bit of a con. In other words, it’s mostly ridiculous, but Winslet has a ball and if you’ve got one at home, teen and tween girls seem to love it.

Starring: Steve Martin, Rihanna, Jim Parsons

In one of the more bizarre casting triumvirates ever, Martin, Rihanna and Big Bang Theory’s Parsons lend their vocals to this cartoon about a pair of fugitives on a road trip following an alien invasion. Yes, it sounds weird, but it’s a perfect outing for the young ones.
