REVIEW: The New Small Person by Lauren Child

New baby? That's always a new challenge for families who already have kids

Who's raining on Elmore Green's parade?

Elmore Green is a young boy who's pretty happy with his life just the way it is. He's 'the funniest, cleverest, most adorable person' in the Green household until one day when everything changes – and Elmore's new baby bro turns up. Not only does Albert get all the attention, he even licks Elmore's precious jelly bean collection. No wonder he asks his parents if Albert can be sent right back where he came from.

As you'd expect, when Lauren Child holds a mirror up to sibling rivalry, what is reflected is so often funny and true (open any Charlie and Lola book and you'll know what I mean). For anyone whose older kids have turned into green-eyed monsters when their new baby arrives, The New Small Person is a clever way to work through issues with a picture book at bedtime.   It offers hope and a glimmer of light at the end of a familiar family tunnel, and you'll enjoy yourselves along the way. Puffin, age: 3+
