Hi,

I’m about to claim child benefit for my newborn daughter but want the payments to go into her mum’s account (we’re living together but she’s better at organising the finances!). I know that CMS will want proof that I’m receiving benefits for the child that is in my care but wanted to know what form this would take? Would it affect anything if I’m the one claiming but the money is paid into my partner’s/our daughter’s mum’s account?

Also: Will deductions for new child be backdated? The claim for benefits will be backdated to when she was born which was a couple of weeks ago, so would this mean that CMS deductions would be backdated to when benefits would be backdated to?

Hi

Apologies for the delay in responding. Can I clarify - do you have a child with a new partner, and you are paying child maintenance to your ex? If that's the case, the child benefit can go to your partner, it doesn't have to go into your account. The CMS will generally accept that you have a child, but it would be easy enough to prove anyway if needed (I can't think I've come across a case of them disputing this).
The change in child maintenance payments would be from the date they are notified, not to when child benefits started.

I’m pretty sure you should be alright claiming the CB and it going into your partners bank account. I’m assuming you share the same address.

Again the CMS will probably just check who is claiming the CB when they make their enquiries.

With the backdated CMS, it might be that they will only make the adjustment from the point you told them about the change of circumstances.

Hopefully William our expert from Child Maintenance Options will have more information for you.
