I have to admit its more that the fairy tales are not as interesting or as fun as many modern story books. The colour, vividness and enjoyment that come from the books we have makes the fairy tales too long or too boring.... :?: Books like The Gruffalo work on so many levels (and interestingly is quite scary but many of the Julia Donanldson are not!) you don't want to "go back"
I definitely enjoy reading scarey stories. Perhaps in turn the little ones enjoy them.
How on earth can anybody trip-trap across a bridge without making the floor shake and little one laugh as the bridge is making the setee/bed/them bounce all over the place.
I guess it might have something to do with the security of 'daddy' being there to make the scarey safe.
The fun bit is just normal, but i wonder if there is anything in 'many a truth spoken in jest'
Even 'boring' books can come alive.
.... and the catepillar ate the strawberry [at this point i close the book as fast as I can so it makes a satisfying and sharp bang]
I guess i try scaring and stir in fun
