TOPIC: Dads now get legal rights?!?!?!?!?!?

Dads now get legal rights?!?!?!?!?!? 6 years 8 months ago #20389

Hi All,

I've just read an article in 'The Telegraph' which states the government has formally decided to recognise the rights of a father to see their children. Although this won't come into affect until next year...Nevertheless isn't in some way going to help the very genuiene, willing and loving fathers out there to access more time with their kids? To ensure a strong relationship whereby it's in the benefit of the children to do so!

I'm literally going to my first sols meeting as the ex has said she wants to go down the legal route base on unfounded accusations I'm an unfit parent.

Hope it's all going to help our children to have a fair and shared upbringing in a very difficult world.

We have the full story here

I hope this is a step in the right direction. Will be interested to see how it's going to work in practise. Though I am glad that there seems to be a will to recognise the important role both parents can play in their child's life.

Next step would be to see legislation to have both parents legally required to be named on Birth Certificates.

..This is good news! :cheer:

I'm cautiously optimistic... as Gooner says lets see how it works in practice, but acknowledgement is a great first step! :)

Mum and Grandmother, supporting my son who has residency of his son.
I want to see a much fairer system in place, where Dads and their children have a voice that can be heard.
There are many groups of people that have equal rights within our society and its about time Dads were given equal rights too.

haveing said that bass about a legal requiment being on both parent being on birth certificate . How would that help the one night stands with woman and fall pregnant. I agree it a great idea but then that could be used as a loop hole for woman to turn round and say i had a one night stand.unless The father know the child has been born and go up on his own to have his name added let say whit in 6 months .just a thort

A very encouraging article. Not before time. Shame it took so long for an such an obvious human right to be recognized. Tragic that many alienated parents and the children that miss them have suffered, and continue to suffer because of the absurdity of some laws.

Alan Beith MP states this 'would simply lead to confusion'. Does he not think a child is confused by the removal of a loving, caring supportive parent from their life?!

He's a Lib Dem and they are opposed as a party to giving dads more rights( they just don't come out an say it) - Sarah Teather (Lib Dem) who was Minister for Children and Families actively blocked all plans to give all dads equal parenting rights. Her opposition to equal rights for dads was based on the assumption that because some unmarried dads ‘might’ pose a risk then all unmarried dads should be denied equal rights.

Not sure that's actually a Lib Dem policy, Bliss, but you're right both those MP's are actively opposed to more rights for dads.

Putting the name on the Birth certificate would certainly help those dads who want it on there and I think that it should be that the mother has to contact the father to put him on there.

But in reality what about victims of rape, or donated sperm etc - we do need to enter these things with caution as it will only be the negatives that will be reported in the press and then it will be doomed to failure!

Such a milestone in the persuit of fairness with access/contact,yet the media have avoided this 'news' other than the telegraphs vague report..should anyone see anything more enlightenning as to the forthcoming changes, please let me/others know!

Both these examples would be exceptions Supes.

The classic example of how the law is a complicated beast is this (and wouldn't be covered by this, so slightly off topic but I'll pull rank on this on  ):

A young unmarried couple in Wales are expecting.
Mother, unfortunately dies during birth.
Her boyfriend (the dad) can not take his child home because he does not have PR.
In this instance social services rushed through the process - dad was assessed and processed quickly to enable him to be with his child.

This happened earlier this year.
