TOPIC: Civic Service

Civic Service 11 years 2 months ago #328

In a recent news interview The MP for Tottenham, David Lammy called for a compulsory "national civic service" and universal entitlement to apprenticeships to tie young men into the world of work.

What would national civic serive look like and would it make a differnace? And is apprenticeship going to work? should we look at going back to an education system that puts the educationally able in to grammer schools and those whos skills are more "manual" in to work based learning?

I came across a great little project last year run by an x-copper who trains kids that are not in employment or education, machanic skills. He has had kids as young as 13 on the course. They come every day for 9 months and there is a teacher on site in the workshop to introduce maths, science and english. He is seeing great results.

Should we radically change all our social systems?

I think it's good that things like apprenticeships are making a come-back. The academic approach really doesn't suit everyone, and to my mind, a University degree in hairdressing is just a barmy idea.

No idea what a civic service would look like but the word "compulsory" sounds a bit scary.
