Hi Folks

I am thinking of buying mobile phones for my two children - they are both 11 years of age.

Is anyone aware of any goods deals going at the moment contract or sim only? I’m not too bothered about the amount of free talk time minutes or the number of free text messages etc. I only want to use the phones to keep in touch with them if they are coming late from school etc.

Thanks in advance for your response

When I lasted looked I was a virgin customer - then their 8p per minute PAYG was by far the cheapest.

I was also looking for a phone for my eldest, and was worried about them running out of credit. Virgin also had virgin mobile to virgin mobile calls as free. My wife was on virgin, so there was no real competition after that!

T-Mobile do a contract called U-Fix

you can choose your level of mins and txt data ect but when they run out the phone stops anything that would run up a bill, you can buy more credit for the rest of the month as pay as you go and they can still recieve calls too.

They would be on contract but with full control, and they would get free phones too.

I used to work for T-Mobile and we used to sell loads of these plans around christmas time

If your a virgin cable/mobile customer you'll be able to use your mobile over wifi to call your UK landlines/mobiles and not cost anything

Virgin Media has dangled a carrot to encourage customers to keep their home landline by launching a new app that offers free calls over Wi-Fi.

The SmartCall app for iOS and Android will allow Virgin Media landline customers to utilise their inclusive home minutes to make free calls wherever Wi-Fi is present.

So, for example, if the customer has unlimited evening and weekend calls attached to the landline plan, they can route all mobile calls through the SmartCall app, proving they're on a Wi-Fi network.

Users can be on any mobile network and, because the app runs on Wi-Fi, can use their minutes from anywhere in the world; meaning free calls home.
Keeping home phone's relavent

Graeme Oxby, Virgin Media's executive director of mobile and home phone, said the new service was all about stretching the home telephone chord.

He said: "SmartCall will stretch the home telephone cord all the way to wherever you might be, whether in a coffee shop in Cornwall or on a beach in Bali. All you need is a home phone from us, a smartphone and a WiFi connection.

"This groundbreaking service will give customers even more fantastic value from their phones and is also another example of how technology can make our lives easier. Virgin Media is best placed to provide the greatest value converged telephone services as the distinction between staying connected in and out of the home blurs and as we look for more ways to give our customers more."

The app will be rolled out to some users later this year before becoming available to the rest of the Virgin Phone customer base in 2013.

Virgin has also announced a new landline called plan that includes free, unlimited calls to mobile phones in the UK as the landline industry battles to stay relevant to smartphone users.

Interesting, quite a few people have been looking at that - it needs someone big to deliver something that works reliably. Virgin are big enough...

In terms of current deals you can also try out good 'old Money Saving Expert. The info is comprehensive, but not always that easy to read through.

Quite a few deals going around. PAYG looks tempting for many as some providers now off free internet data and lots of texts for a small top up. Worth considering.

Hi there

I have two teenagers who both have mobile phone contracts - like you we got them when they moved up to senior school. Like most 11 year olds they got smart phones as they can download games etc and look at facebook or surf the net. They didnt actually use their phones for making calls - they sent text messages but most of the communication is done through FB or IM. Most of the time the phone isn't even charged!

You Fix is a good package but even at £26 per month you only get 500MB of data and the likes of Tesco will also cap the tariff.

To be honest the PAYG deals or sim only deals will offer better value but you then need to buy a phone

My suggestion would be - work out how they are planning to use the phone than allow for them overspending.

If you can afford it go for something like T-Mobile full monty (2000 minutes, unlimited text and data) but it costs £36 per month I am sure the other companies do similar deals. You will get a decent phone.

Try e2save.com - if you can remember to claim the cashback, there are some stupidly cheap deals - I got one for my daughter a few months back that has an effective monthly cost of about £3 per month with a free galaxy ace. The are part of carphone warehouse.

If there are cashback terms on the contracts, scan any paperwork you need onto your of in case you lose the originals and make sure you have reminders set to claim as soon as possible.
