...crossing everything with you!
DadTalk Moderator... I'm not legally trained and my responses are my own views based on my experiences of the family court. I have plenty of common sense and can offer you emotional support and guide you to answers.

Never my intention to bring hopes down but my experience with the pro-bono unit left me super deflated. I think they mainly look for significant cases such as care orders and headliners, maybe it's due to the limited number of pro-bono hours being offered in my city.

All the best nevertheless.

We've had previous members who's application for pro bono assistance has been successful... More specifically an enforcement case as I recall. Obviously, I can't reveal details.

It's always advisable to tailor any expectations, but hope is another matter and a little of that does no harm I think.

Sorry to hear your own experience of pro bono left much to be desired halfoyster.

How do you get someone to refer you? I don't think my MP will care about my case.

If I approach a lawyer won't they just be annoyed that in not using them.

I've contacted CAB about this but not sure how long they'll take to get in touch with me.

Your MP does not technically care, but you will need to fill the form. Post or drop it off at your MP's for a signature and they post it.

Hi BM

It will depend on your MP, some are more interested than others.

Here's the link on how to get referred

www.barprobono.org.uk/do-you-need-help.html

You can be referred by MP, CAB or a Law Centre.

Some of our members have been successful in receiving help this way.

Good luck, let us know if we can offer any help.

I have several years experience supporting parents in family proceedings as a McKenzie Friend. I am, however, not a lawyer or barrister and my responses are based on my own opinions or experiences of the family court.

I'll be honest i didn't expect the help i got from my MP.
i just thought i'd get his signature on the application but i got much more than that......they copied the 150 or so pages, including deviders and lables that i had put to gether as my bundle being submitted.
not only did they do that they posted it off and gave me proof of postage! had i had to post it myself via recorded/registered delivery via the post office i expect it would have cost me close to £20 with the size and weight.

and i feel guilty because i didn't vote for him lol.....i will be doing next year if his party change their act!

i'm just waiting on a decision from the Bar Pro Bono Unit now....they've had my application a week and its been allocated a case worker....so fingers are crossed

Good luck dad-i-d

How nice to hear your MP's office have been helpful - good to have some positive experiences spoken about.

Please let us know how you get on and if there's anything we can do to support or help.

Good (ish) News....

The Bar Pro Bono Unit have reviewed my case

"The barrister who reviewed your case thought you could probably manage an hour’s hearing in person but she has observed that she would be prepared to authorise representation for you if issues are not resolved at the review and there is a subsequent hearing."

I'm happy and disapointed at the same time, i was hoping the chance they would represent me at the hearing coming up in my view then to nail the ex once and for all but i'm guessing they will be thinking this is not going to be the end of it and maybe my ex will appeal if i win therefore the thought they will represent me for any hearing after really does make me feel more confident.

i'll update after the hearing i guess sometime in September.

Your ex can't appeal if you win just because she doesn't like the outcome, so that's not something I'd worry about. It may be that they don't think it's necessary to represent you because they think there's the possibility that it might be resolved at the first hearing, or at least it will be a simple administrative exercise to decide what needs to be done for a second hearing. I'd take their decision as good news :)
