TOPIC: Bedbugs Nursery Rhyme

Bedbugs Nursery Rhyme 3 years 11 months ago #71686

I wasn't sure where to put this really...

I always sing the bedbugs nursery rhyme to my 3 year old daughter when I put her to bed - 'Goodnight, sleep tight, make sure the bedbugs don't bite...' I have been doing this for about 4 months now, and she loves it, and always joins in. However, last weekend when I sang it, my daughter interrupted and said 'No, Mummy says we musn't do that song', and she kept repeating that. I said I wasn't sure why Mummy says that, but the song is just a bit of fun, and not to worry, and carried on singing.

This could be just a 3 year old being a 3 year old with their active imaginations. But at the same time, knowing my ex, I wouldn't put it past her to say something like that to my daughter for whatever ridiculous reason she might have - her thoughts and ideas don't make any sense at the best of times. Afterwards I wondered if it was because it was not pc to sing that rhyme nowadays, but couldn't find anything online when I searched, and can't think of any reason it would be seen as offensive or harmful. I know it says about 'beating' the bedbugs. But they're bedbugs, it's either that or hoover the damn things up!

I haven't asked my ex, because if you ask her why she has an opinion on anything she turns in to a witch, and I am fed up of dealing with that these days and trying to restore some calm in to my life, and now I just go by own instincts and intuition when deciding what's best for our child when she is in my care.

Can anyone enlighten me as to why a parent wouldn't want their child to hear or sing that song? My dad used to sing it to me and my sister every night, and lo and behold I haven't taken the bedbugs in the song as a metaphor for people and grown up to beat anyone black and blue. Haha.

Hello richcthomas,

Your post reads exactly the same as what my Son and I have experienced with his daughter (same age as yours). The only difference is the rhyme.

My conclusion is that the children show they enjoy these little verses and the mothers become jealous that the child is enjoying something with the father. Try a different rhyme for the next week or two then go back to the original one and see what the response is then.

Keep singing and having fun.

This would really make a lot of sense, as my ex is completely fixated on competing with me and trying to damage mine and my daughter's relationship for jealousy. She would rather our daughter didn't have a father, hence not letting me see her for 6 months without good reason, if it means she is the number 1 parent. She has already tried to change my name from Daddy to Dad, so her new fiance can take the Daddy title, which has failed miserably, and she has ruined several items of clothing I have sent my daughter home in. It's hard to prove she has done it purposefully, but if you knew my ex, you would know it was on purpose - or being careless with them on purpose. It does sound like another in a long list of irrational things she has done. I will try a new rhyme tomorrow and see what happens.

Yeah sounds like my ex used to be they hate their child having a good time with daddy just take it on the chin brush it off and use it to try something else at bed time My daughter will only have me read her favourite book which is Peppa Pig "my daddy" she's got hundreds of books but she will only have that one read to her at bed time :)

I'm no way trained in Family court matters so don't take my ramblings as gospel but I've been through the Court mill and learned so much along the way I just like passing my experience on to other Dads who face this absolute nightmare from hell, you might not be able to beat the system but don't let it beat you :)
