TOPIC: Ex wants to change my son’s name

Ex wants to change my son’s name 1 month 2 days ago #98440

I have a 6 month old son. I’m currently not seeing him at all as admittedly I was emotionally abusive towards my ex and did things that weren’t necessarily in the best interests of my child. I feel awful for this, but can’t change it now.

My ex suggested to me before that our son had both of our names, but I shut her down and basically refused.

She’s now claiming that I bullied her out of including her name (I guess it could be viewed that way).

Thing is, I want him to have my name, and don’t want him to have hers. It’s not traditional and I want him to keep mine.

Is she likely to be able to change his name? Very scared this will happen!

To be honest it’s too difficult to call, if she can prove she was bullied (which you’ve admitted) the court may agree to a double barrelling of his surname.

I'm not a lawyer or barrister and my responses are based on my own opinions or experiences of the family court.

I may not be legally trained... but I have plenty of experience and common sense!

Taking a step back from this, would it really be so bad if the name was double barrelled? Personally, I think you would be better letting this one through and concentrating on more important matters. On top of which, if she wins this one, then it's psychologically better for her, whereas if you change your mind and let her proceed, it's a compromise, so she might be more inclined to compromise in other areas.
