TOPIC: New to the Site and 1st time dad!!

New to the Site and 1st time dad!! 10 years 3 months ago #5615

Hi all im new to this site and am still finding my feet! Found out 3 weeks ago that im going to be a dad! I am absolutely chuffed and really looking forward to the big day and just being a dad in general. But as it’s the 1st time around im just after any useful hints or tips or even Do's and Dont's for the pregnancy would be very grateful, as everything I seem to be doing for my partner is no good! She is suffering with sickness real bad at the moment so if anyone knows anything their partners used during their pregnancy that worked would be fantastic!!

Looking forward to speaking to all the Dads out there!! : D

Hi Rhys,

Welcome to DadTalk mate - Congratulations by the way :D

1st kid eh ? good times - and very confusing times as well.

We have a few expectant first time dads who have joined the site at the same time (meercat, spinyadas and Soon2BeDaddy to name a few) so you'll be able to support each other through this. We also have old hands who are more than happy to give advice.

Hope you enjoy being part of our Dad community.

Gooner :ugeek:

Yea 1st one on the way cant wait!! trying to read up as much as possible!! got the prgnancy book given to us by the midwife in the bathroom for some "light" reading while on the throne ;) which the missus finds hilarious!! But only so much you can learn from a book, thats why a site like this is fantastic to get tips from guys who have been there!! Looking forward to chatting with as many of you as possible!!

Afternoon All.

The Hot FM here, my name is Glenn and I am going to be a dad for the first time, my wife is just over 12 weeks and we had the scan last week. That was a bit mad to say the least.Tbh I have mixed emotions about it all and I am still getting used to it but cant wait till January 26th 2011.

Any tips and hints on how the hell you try and get your other half to eat when everything makes her sick. Anyone else had this problem?

I found this site in the match day program from the Spurs game last night so advertising in there works because I was wondering if there was anything out there for dads as there seems to be loads of forums for mums to be.

Good to be here and look forward to all the help I can get.

Cheers

Glenn - C'mon you Kettering and Spurs.

Hey Glenn, hope you enjoyed the scan! Cant wait for ours!! As soon as i hear the post falling through the door in the morning im tearing them open praying there is a letter there regarding the scan, no luck yet :(

What i have found in regards to the food situation is find the one thing your partner fancies/or has craving for and try and plan you meal around that i.e

My partner has been craving bacon, so i cooked a chicken and bacon stack with mash, the bacon is there for her to eat plus the chicken and mash is there for her to pick at, 8 times out of 10 she clears the plate lol. But whatever you do decide to cook try not to over load the plate, try little portions but leave enough left over for another small meal, for your partner if she likes what you have cooked there is more left for her, (Plus if it seems your letting her have extra its good brownie points!! lol)

Also if your partner is suffering with sickness alot try getting some travel sickness wrist bands, I got some for my partner from Sainsburys think i paid £8 for them but they do work also Sprite has been working.

Hope some of this helps and best of luck!!

Rhys.

Re: New to the Site and 1st time dad!! 10 years 3 months ago #5695

Hi Rhys

Thanks for the advice, I'm not much of a cook and the problem is my wife didn't let me near the kitchen so the first problem I have is re learning how to cook :? I will try your suggestion, bacon chicken and mash sounds bloody lovely.

We found out about our little bubba when my wife was about 8 weeks gone so we had the midwife appointment fairly quickly and then the scan was about 3-4 weeks after so it all moved quickly and I didnt have alot of time to get my head around me but trust me even if you are the toughest bloke in the world (my wife calls me an emotional retard!) even I had a lump in my throat. It's the wierdest thing.

It's very strange with the sickness thing, my wife is always feeling sick without the actual being sick and then maybe twice in a week, sorry for being graphic, chunders all over the bathroom. I will go to boots and look for the band you metioned.

The food thing is strange as my wife is a bit of a control freak and being pregnant makes things twice as bad, I am never doing the right way which winds me right up. So I get half way through cooking and she comes in and takes over. Cant complain, she doesnt keep me a awake at night.

Thanks again, feel free to pm me if you want any help or advice because I think I am a little bit in front of you but trust me the time flies.

All the best

Glenn

I dont have the problem of the missus telling me how to cook, mainly because she cant cook for s**t! lol, try meals like Fajita wraps, you cook the chicken in with the packet mix so its rather simple, the plus side is your patner can choose her own fillings so its less pressure on you where she can just pick exactly what she wants, but when it comes to choosing the seasoning for the chicken there are a lot a different choices, try to avoid the spicy ones, i made that mistake and the missus was hugging the toilet for the rest of the night, you can get a crispy chicken one which is really nice and its not spicy.

With the fillings i normally make up a salad, savory rice, cheese, salsa (cool if spicy brings on the sickness) or sweet chilli sauce is nice!!, a bbq dipping sauce (you can get one with Jack Daniels in which is out of this world!!)

If you want any recipe ideas just let me know, was brought up in a pub kitchen so im a dab hand when it comes to cooking :) think thats why the missus is with me lol

We had out 1st appointment with the midwife on Sunday (just gone) we worked it out roughly that she is 10 weeks gone, not really sure to be honest. I just cant wait for the scan! I just know im going to need a few tissues at hand! Its all sinking in slowly!

Hi Rhys

In regards to your first post i found it really hard to find a book that was useful plenty funny ones and ones for the wife whos pregnant in the end I found a good on called 'Call me Dad!' it is written by three fathers they are in New Zealand but dont hold that against them and it directed more about things the farther needs to do and prepare for I was recommended by my brother whos back home and I have found it useful for the preparations. i suppose I will find out how good it is when our baby arrives :) . All the best
