Turn Down The V%lume is an initiative that shows you how, by lowering the strength of your drink, you can consume less units of alcohol without actually drinking less.

Not only will the following ten tips help you consume less but in doing so it will

  • Help you sleep better
  • Improve your looks as drinking effects your weight, skin and teeth.
  • Become healthier
  • Feel happier as alcohol is a depressant
  • Be financially better off
  1. Turn down the v%lume: changing to a pint of 3.8%ABV larger from a 5.2% ABV pint saves nearly a unit per pint.
  2. Put your drink down between sips – you drink twice as fast if you keep holding your glass.
  3. Avoid rounds! You’ll end up drinking at the speed of the fastest drinker!
  4. Alternate your drinks, 1 x alcoholic then 1 x non alcoholic (it really won’t make you less of a man and your kids will pick up your habits!)
  5. Do something when your drinking, like have a meal or play cards/pool as engaging in an activity will slow you down
  6. Thirsty? Quench your thirst with soft drinks before you start on the alcoho
  7. If you automatically grab for a beer or glass of the red at the end of the evening try other ways to relax like sport, a walk, a bath or listening to music.
  8. “ I won’t drink before ....
  9. ” set a time and stick to it!
  10. When pouring spirits at home use a shot measure and remember 25ml = pub measure= 1 unit
  11. Budget for your alcohol and stick to it!

Men should drink no more that 3-4 units of alcohol a day compared to women who should drink no more that 2-3 units. On top of this it’s recommended that everyone should have 2 alcohol–free days a week.
