Transition – are you ready for big school?

Ready for the start of a new term at a new school?

If your children are all suited and booted and heading to High School next week you will know that their is a lot of anticipation and maybe a slight feeling of pressure. Although it can feel like a big step to send your ‘baby’ off to big school this is a journey they have been preparing for since they started kindergarten. Over the coming days you might be faced with a million questions. How will I make new friends? How will I find my classes? Will I be able to keep on top of my homework? It is completely understandable that your child might need more support from you as they enter this new exciting phase of their life. Give them all your love and support and they will fly.

Dad.Info asked one girl from South-East London to let us know how she is preparing for her next steps in education.

This is what she wrote

Hi, I’m Emilie and I’m eleven years old. I’m heading towards secondary school in September and I’m writing to help you understand some things that may be going on in your child’s mind.

A basic one is: am I going to get lost? Most probably yes. You must understand secondary school is a big place and a big change from primary school. And for the first few weeks, if you get lost, all charges are dropped. But after three months and you are still getting lost, it’s a detention, well for my school it is.

My second worry is: Am I going to get bullied? Simple answer; no. Most schools have a strict anti-bullying policy. If your child is getting bullied go talk to your child and deal with it together.

Most children worry about homework. My answer is to stop it from piling up, advise your child to do it on the day you’re given it. I’ve learnt do it straight away and you’ll be okay.

This is not really a worry but something all parents need to know. You must let your child/children have some freedom. We go in as little ones and come out as adults.

For myself, these aren’t my worries. What I’m looking forward to is art and GCSEs. I have a few people from my class coming to the same school as me.

Thanks for sharing your worries and hopes Emilie, good luck as you start ‘Big’ school next week.
