I am a father of 4
The eldest is 10 and I found out I was her father 2.5 years ago. I started paying an agreed monthly sum directly to her mother immediately and have been do so ever since.
Now I've been hit with an arrears bill of 30k.
I'm so stressed, they had never contacted me previously - how can they suddenly do this?!
Can I appeal this as I didnt know the child.was mine. Does the fact that I've been paying regularly since the paternity test mean anything?
If this is how it is going to be, what is the least they will accept monthly? As at the moment, I have nothing spare.
Hi
Who has sent you an arrears bill ? Ex / cms ?
Hi there
There is an appeals process, I would get the ball rolling with that and also ask for a full breakdown of the alleged arrears in writing... try and keep everything in writing as a point of future reference.
If there are arrears, she must have opened a case with the CSA/CMS some time back, have you been at the same address since the birth of your child? Did the mother know where to contact you?
It might help to go and speak to your MP about it, they can assist in situations like this.
Best of luck
I also read this morning there is a 1 year time limit on claiming arrears .. if it’s cms then you need to call them ASAP . If your finances were done via a consent order and you’ve kept up with that then you should be fine
