That's not really how it works. Google for Child Benefit, Child Tax Credits and Working Tax Credits for the full picture. If you are not together the CSA are likely to take 15% of your pay for her if I remember correctly, they have a calculator to work it out on their website. It would be worth going to Citizens Advice for a full explanation, i've found them to be very helpful when I knew nothing about the money side of things.

Hi there,

You are not responsible for child benefit, that is a payment made by the Government to all parents. The only payment you might be liable for is child maintenance which is payable when parents split up and the parent that no longer lives with the child has to pay a contribution, a percentage of his salary for the care of the child...this is usually the father. That is when the CSA gets involved and only if the mother makes a claim. If the paying parent is on benefits or a low income then the amount is minimal, if the paying parent is a high earner then the amount he pays will be much more.

Hi There,

As has already been said you don't cover the benifits, that comes from the government.

You are as said liable for child support if you aren't with the mother, however this doesn't have to be done through the CSA you can have a private agreement through the 2 of you, if you do this though make sure you make the payments through a bank transfer and have it listed as child support so there can't be any claims you haven't paid.

Hi Nick,

Welcome to DAD. I have moved your thread here because Child Maintenance Options can offer you some advice.

I was a little confused by your post - are you and your girlfriend still together or have you split up?

Gooner.
