Hi - Appologies if this is in the wrong section, im new here.

I pay £600 per month (privately, not through the CSA). I have been estranged from my sons for 10 years (although see them regularly ).

My eldest is 18 in December - I believe I am obliged to continue paying the ex until his college course finishes the following September?

Assuming this is the case, am I obliged to keep paying the ex when he goes to university?

Also, in the absence of CSA advice, can anyone advise me, when I finally stop paying for the eldest, what proprtion of the £600 per month should still be paid for my youngest son?

Sorry to come straight in with a load of questions, but I would be very grateful for any advice.

Steve.

Hi Steve,

Don't worry about the questions its why the site is here.

It's my understanding that you pay the maintenance payments until you son leaves full time education which would include university how long is the course he is signed onto?

I guess if he were to be studying away from home you could always look at paying him directly though this may leave you wide open for the CSA to chase for non payments, would your ex entertain giving him an allowance in the region of his share of the CSA if he were living away, though if he's at home still he still needs to be fed and homed by your ex.

Thanks Darren - so its possible these days we could be subsidising ex's for our kids until they are 22/23?

Will post my story on the introduce yourself page if thats ok?

Yep I guess so, and even longer if they don't do so well and retake the final year.

I'll disagree with Darren here (it had to happen eventually 😆 ) - full time education does not cover university education - you were correct that it stops the September after he leaves college, when child benefit ceases to be paid any more. After that, if you still have one child under 18 in full time education, then it's 15% of your takehome pay.
