[Solved] Overseas Support Payments

Does anyone here have experience dealing with overseas support payments? My ex is living in Canada with my two children. I have been sending regular support to them without a legal agreement in place. I am wondering what implications there may be for making this agreement official. In Canada, child support is paid with after tax income wheras spousal support is paid pre-tax (the receipient pays the tax). My biggest concern is that I will be taxed at source here in the UK and then she will be taxed on the money in Canada which ultimately takes money away from the raising of my kids.

Has anyone had dealings with this type of situation?

Regards,

Robin

Hi Robin

I have no experience with this, but I would suggest that you contact the Inland Revenue, they are very helpful these days, and they will make sure you don't pay tax if you shouldn't have to. If you do get advice that helps, ask them to confirm in writing if possible - it's always good to have evidence of what they've said.
