please can you advise me with regards to the legalities of paying csa. My daughter turned 18 in feb this year, she completed her full time education in june this year and will now either be working or waiting to go to uni. She has no contact with me and neither does her mother but I have always paid my csa on time and in full for the last 8 years.
When can I stop my payment schedule??
thanks

Hi

You should be able to stop payments as of September this year I believe.

I am in a similar situation. My daughter who I see regularly (and I'm still on good term with her mother) turned 18 in December, but is going back to school in September to do a third year at A-level because she changed her subjects. She will be doing 8 hours a week in school from September and will be attending a 12-week night-school course in 2013 (2 hours a week which we'll have to pay for).

As I understand it the threshold is >12 hours full-time education up to A-level:

I will continue to support my daughter at a reduced rate, giving the money directly to her not her mother. From the comment below I assume that a payment does NOT need to be paid in September. Please confirm.

DaiHard,

I will ask Child Maintenance Options to pop by and confirm that your understanding of the rules are correct.

Cheers

Hi, I'm Sarah, a consultant at Child Maintenance Options.

Ricardo - If you have a CSA case then under child support legislation, regular child maintenance payments must be made until a child is 16 years old, or 19 if they are in full-time education (A-level or equivalent), or for as long as Child Benefit is being paid. The CSA should tell you when your payments can stop.

DaiHard - With a family-based arrangement (where you and the other parent sort out child maintenance between yourselves) it's up to you and the other parent to agree when payments stop. If you both agree that you will continue paying a reduced amount directly to your daughter, then a family-based arrangement gives you the flexibility to do that.

I hope this information helps.

Sarah.
