I live in Scotland and my son lives in England should travel expenses be taken into consideration when calculating the maintenance that I pay as it affects the amount of times I can travel to see my son?

Hi and welcome

Under the CSA rules, any reasonable travel expenses in excess of £15 per week can be deducted from the takehome pay figure used when calculating the maintenance due - in practice, this often doesn't mean much of a reduction, but it's better than nothing.

I understand from CSA that you can claim 15p per mile or 94p per litre but the minimum claim is £15 so effectively by my calculation that means you will have to travel a minimum of 100 miles or more. My question also is; a) Is the round trip claimable b) is it calculated to the specific home / pickup venue or can an allowance be included to the nearest town (if they live in a remote village perhaps) as this costing you when visiting – c) in my opinion 15p per mile is too low and doesn’t cover the wear and tare of the vehicle [indeed most organisations are higher than this in realty so how did they make this assessment and when is this reviewed by CSA] which you are having to buy to visit your child so who do you escalate these sort of issues to or lobby be reviewed? the principle here in my view is that you should be put back in the position as if they lived with you demographically as you and be recompensed for this as a deductible expense, as are paying outside this calculation CSA maintenance, but would appreciate some comment on the above and my point by a specialist (Moderator or otherwise) see thread on this topic also in finance section.

I've just replied to the other topic, so take a look at that, but I've also asked the CMO to comment on that, so worth checking back over the next few days.
