Hi im new on here, I pay every month to my ex wife for my son, I don't have a problem with this (to a a point) my son is 16 and has left school but goes to college 3 times a week, is this classed as full time education.
I'd like to stop paying child support and open an account for him.

Hi coldhart,

Welcome to DAD. I have moved your post over to this board as it is the best place to get the answers to your question. I will ask Child Maintenance Options to pop by and offer you some advice.

I pretty sure full time is classed as 12 hours or more.

Hi Coldhart

Thank you for your post, I am William the Child Maintenance Options consultant. With you having a family-based arrangement in place with your ex-partner, you may wish to try to discuss when your payments will end. With a family-based arrangement there are no strict rules or formulas to follow when calculating and arranging maintenance payments. Family-based arrangement are not legally binding, however, they can be flexible to suit the needs of both parents and their child.

If you feel that you can not come to an agreement with your ex-partner, you may wish to follow the guidelines set out by the Governments Statutory Scheme. Under child support legislation, regular child maintenance payments must be made until a child is 16 years old, or 20 if they are in full-time, non-advanced education (A-level or equivalent), or for as long as Child Benefit is being paid.
When a child leaves full-time education in the summer, Child Benefit generally continues until the first week of September. You can find more information on the statutory rules by visiting https://www.gov.uk/when-child-maintenance-payments-stop.

We have a sorting out separation web-app that you may find useful. It offers help and support to separating and separated families. The link is: www.dad.info/divorce-and-separation/sorting-out-separation.

If you would a confidential chat with Child Maintenance Options team or find out more about all the options available for child maintenance, you can call us free on 0800 988 0988 between 8am and 8pm Monday to Friday or 9am and 4pm on Saturday, alternatively you can visit our website at www.cmoptions.org.
