...I was thinking how helpful some kind of search facility would be. I often want to have a look for specific information but to find it means trawling through numerous posts.
My other suggestion is for some kind of notification of private messages....perhaps into our email inbox, the same as if we subscribe to a topic and we get alerted by email.... the same could be done for PMs.

The search at the top of the website doesn't work reliably for me so I have to rely on my memory. That's how bad it is!!

No there's not. When we moved over to this new snazzy forum we lost the ability to search the forum. I am in the process of trying to find a search addon for the forum - I will keep you posted.
