Have spent a few evenings this week with my eldest tracing our family tree.

We have got back as far at 1743 so far and we are both really getting into it.

Has anyone else done theirs?

I did this a while back. I did it for my kids and it was remarkably easy as others had done the work for me - my ex sister in law had done my ex's family and two of my cousins had done both sides of my family, so all I had to do was to put the whole lot together using family tree software.

My family (on both sides) came from Russia as emigrees so there are no records or memories from before about 100 years ago, but my ex sister in law has gone back 2 or 3 hundred years - they are Scottish (and descended from Rob Roy McGregor) so there's a sheep rustler and other criminals included in there somewhere if I remember correctly 🙂 )

The software I have used limits me to 250 entries unless I want to pay a monthly fee, which I don't as I'm only interested really in direct descendants, but it does notify me of matches in other peoples trees and there's a couple of distant family members who have build trees of literally thousands of people.

Hi SM

I've been doing mine using Genes Reunited, managed to get as far back as 1290, found I'm related to a Sir John Blackett 😮 roll: 😳
and not more than a few babies born out of wedlock.

It's a great site, I managed to link up with some guys who share parts of their family tree with me and managed to get pictures of old family homes etc. I even spoke to one guy who is in his 90's now, lives in Australia and had some pictures of his extended family from when he was a boy but he didnt know who they were of. Turned out, it was my grandparents wedding and he is my gran's cousin!

It's definately something worth doing if anyone out there is thinking about starting it.
