[Solved] Can my ex change my childrens names

I have just stumbled across some letters from my DD's school when doing her home work, these are letters asking for my ex to check the details held on my DD are correct, They also detail emergency contacts for the school to get in touch with. It turns out my ex has changed it so that i am no longer an emergency contact for my daughters school and that my daughter is now using my ex's mothers surname.

How can this be right? Surely i would need to provide consent for her to change my daughters name. I'm not sure if this is something she has done via the proper channels or if its just a case of her now calling her by the different name.

Advice needed before i confront her please.

Do you have PR for your daughter? If so, then she can't legally change the name she is known by without your consent - I would have a word with the school about this. I am less sure about the situation regarding the emergency contact - that may depend on the school, so again, I'd have a word with them about this in the first instance.

Hi Roper,

She cannot change the name if you have PR as she needs your consent. I had this problem recently, I applied for a duplicate birth certificate and went to the doctor's surgery, proved my PR and asked them to flag a warning for any name change. I'm sure if you went to the school with you proof of PR they are obliged to change it back.

I found this link to the UK deed poll very informative http://www.deedpoll.org.uk/AdviceForFathers.html

Also, i posted the problem on these boards in this thread http://www.dad.info/dad-talk-forum/legal-eagle/17589-changing-baby-s-name

At the end of that thread are details on how to contact the CCLC who were very helpful.

Hope this helps 🙂
