Hi, I'm new to this forum and not sure if I'm posting in the correct part but I was hoping for some advice.
I have been paying my child maintenance for as long as I can remember through CSA I have made regular payments each week but last year I had an accidents at work and hurt my back, instead of leaving work altogether I got put on lite duties and reduced my hours to 24. So looked on the CSA website and made the regular payments that it said on the calculator, I didn't contact CSA just reduced payment (which I now know I should of) this was April last year and they have only contacted me now to say I owe £955 which I cannot afford on the wage I'm on now and I sent in payslips but there now saying I can't have it back dated as I never notified them and have to pay the full amount. I have 2 children of my owe to support and this going to leave us in serve hardship. Do I have any chance at getting it back dated? Thanks in advance for any advice

Hi Im sorry I think bass is right, you should have informed them and followed the correct procedure they didnt know why you reduced the payments. Are you still on reduced hours and have you now informed them to recalculate your payments. I would ask for this to be done then offer a set amount that you can afford to pay on top. But like bass says there ruthless and dont care, you are just a name . In 2014 csa are being scrapped and it will be a family agreement in place for paying maintanance.

Yes we are still on the same wage of £162 a week, just wanting to send all his payslips in so that they can calculate the new payments. I'm not sure what I will be able to afford we really struggle paying what we pay now. Do you think if we offer them say £4 a week extra they will accept this? The new bedroom tax starts in April and because my son isn't 10 year old we were told he has to share a room with his sister so classed as having a spare room so we have to pay an extra £14 on top of the rent we already pay. So £4 a week would be the max

This is so cruel, bedroom tax what on earth as the uk come too. So how old are children supposed to be now to have there own room, its utter madness. I dont know if they will accept £4.00 I dont know how they work out how to pay arrears. I hope someone can advise you. Have you been to citizens advise, could you reduce any other out goings. Its so difficult living like this and such a worry. I have been in your shoes many years ago and I know how hard it can be.

They say my son has to be 10 years old, he's only 7. So got 3 years yet, was told to get a lodger in but I wouldn't feel comfortable with that especially when my kids are so young. My partner wants to go to college in September and has an interview next week but now we need to sit down and works things out to see if she can actually afford to go.

It might be worth asking the CSA what the payments would be once your income has reduced as a result of your partner not working. If as a result, you are on means tested benefits, then this could change what they can take - I'm not sure about this, but worth enquiring.

Also, would your partner be entitled to a student loan? As well as paying for studies, there is an element of the loan for general expenses, and this may help you both afford the cost of the course - it would be a great shame to miss the opportunity for further study.
