[Solved] How does legal aid work?

Hi troops,

As you know until now I'm self repping and have won interim contact in a Scottish court at the start of Feb.

I applied for legal aid and this was granted on friday evening, I applied prior to any court dates way back in Jan.

I was found liable for costs of a bar report at the sheriff's appointment (and not my own suggestion) and legal aid said this would be covered even though I started the court action of my own doing because I didn't want to hang around.

Although I want a solicitor for advice, I still want to stand up in court myself.

Is this possible? I don't want it to look like I have only got a solicitor to pay for the bar report then ditch them. I do want one helping in the background and the legal aid board to pay for the report as £5,000 min is just a bit too much for me but I still want the ability to stand up in court myself as no human on this earth knows the level of detail that I do. Until now I have drafted all the paperwork myself and I'm happy to continue this, I solely need a solicitor for advice and obviously need one in place for legal aid.

Ah, I anticipated this question in another reply of mine 😀

Best thing to do is to speak to your solicitor and tell him what you want to do and see what you can come up with.

Haha I thought you replied there in error.

I'll speak with the LAB first, they are easier to contact than my solicitor is.

If your solicitor isn't easy to get hold of, then I definitely agree that you want to be doing a lot of it yourself.
